He who made time made lots of it they say; but toward the end of 2009 I wasn’t able to allocate enough time to keep this blog up to date as I became involved with Trim 2025 which took up all my spare time. However, I did maintain a certain level of productivity in Q4/2009 and this blog is a very quick look at ’some’ of what I had been doing between October and Christmas 2009 - to close out 2009 so to speak.
In short, I had a great shoot with Podge & Niamh Ham Sandwich for their single ‘Out of the Darkness’, Meath’s ONV Magazine very kindly featured me in their Christmas edition (Many thanks to ONV), I handled press/promotion/web site and photography for The Magic Numbers, Ham Sandwich & Guests who played at the launch of Trim 2025 on December 4th, while legendary Glenties fiddler, Vincent Campbell released a wonderful double CD of traditional Donegal fiddle music featuring one of my photographs (taken in Trim) on thee cover of the CD and another in the sleeve. Thats a few of the highlights and now for the pictures to match including Gerry Tully, Tommy Fleming, John Spillane, Don Baker, Harlem Gospel Choir, The Blizzards, The Magic Numbers, Ham Sandwich, Brian Kennedy, Opera Theatre Company, David McWilliams, O’ Carolan Harp Festival (Nobber), Save Louth Hospital Campaign & Feile Na Mi …..

Finally and sadly, on Christmas morning 2009, the people of Longford Town woke to the sight of St. Mels Cathedral in flames. As we all know the building was destroyed and it will take considerable time and resources to restore it to its former glory. If you would like to make a donation to the restoration fund you can do so via post or bank transfer. The details are on the Longford Parish Website. The scale of the damage can be seen on Joe O’ Briens blog link HERE. Below are a few photographs of the Longford County Choir performing in St. Mels at Christmas 2007 as we remember it ….

On June 20th, 2009, an overjoyed Henry Mountcharles brought Oasis back to Slane Castle, 14 years after they appeared with REM in 1995, following the release of “Definitely Maybe” in 1994. In the interim 14 years since Slane 1995, which also featured “Spearhead“, “Sharon Shannon“, “Belly” & “Luka Bloom“, Oasis has become one of the biggest bands in the world, releasing a further nine albums (including live and greatest hits). Meanwhile, Michael Franto & Spearhead played Vicar Street on June 29th, Luka Bloom & Sharon Shannon have become a major recording artists, but “Belly” split in 1996!
In summary, Oasis were in the very rich company of The Prodigy, Kasabian, Glasvegas & The Blizzards - a great bill of music indeed!!; this The Blizzards second appearance at Slane, having played with Ash and Director at The Red Bull X-Fighters in 2007. Slane 2009 was a musical journey for all 80′000 music fans as bands delivered trademark performances. Dynamite in the form of “The Prodigy” was explosive to say the least as Slane was put through its Rock ‘N Roll paces covering all bases from chaos to elation in one short insurmountable set, which set the scene for an Oasis home run, delivering a greatest hits performance complete with maximum audience participation to the end. What a difference a day of music makes so Thank you for the music and now for some band and social photographs perhaps as we look forward to Slane 2010 ……

I had the pleasure of catching up with some members of Kells finest, Ham Sandwich in Meath this week at a scheduled rehearsal for forthcoming gigs including the airing of much new material, which indicated that project Ham Sandwich is proceeding at a respectable pace, passing the milestones along the way toward the follow-up to the critically aclaimed debut album “Carry The Meek” (now available on lovely vinlyl for my blue Project turntable). Check out their official web site and myspace for Summer dates which include the fantastic Indiependence Music Festival in Mitchelstown, Cork alongside Ocean Colour Scene, Super Furry Animals, Mundy [see my earlier Mundy blog], Delorentos (thanks for nor breaking up!) and The Blizzards who are also on the Slane 2008 [see my earlier blog] bill with Oasis …. Those in Meath and surrounding areas can catch Ham Sandwich performing a special acoustic set in Boyles of Slane on June 04th. A few pictures of Podge and Ollie in full swing below…..
